What is more energy/water efficient: Hand-Washing or using the Dishwasher?

We moved into a new house with a brand new Dishwasher; and we always have the question on whether or not we should use the dishwasher, since we don't know which one will save more money from both water and energy side.

Do you know facts on which way of washing dishes is more efficient?

Thanks.What is more energy/water efficient: Hand-Washing or using the Dishwasher?
';Now, thanks to a scientific study at the University of Bonn in Germany, you can have your cake and eat it too-relaxed in the knowledge that the cleaning up with your trusted machine will be a piece of cake and the eco-friendly thing to do...

The Bonn study proves that the dishwasher uses only half the energy and one-sixth of the water, less soap too. Even the most sparing and careful washers could not beat the modern dishwasher. The study also rated the cleanliness achieved, again in favor of the washing machine.';

Apparently dishwasher is better haha. And anyway, time is money so I would say dishwasher is more efficient overall. You just turn it on and leave!What is more energy/water efficient: Hand-Washing or using the Dishwasher?
Consumer Reports did a study on this after the Bonn study and confirmed the findings. That in fact washing by dishwasher used less water and less energy than washing by hand as long as you use nergy saver dry and had a full load.

That blew me away! But it makes me feel better about using my dishwasher on energy saver mode.
Handwashing. If you have a bin of soapy water to wash in and a bin of clean water to rinse, handwashing is more efficient.

But dishwashers will always give your more sanitary dishes because the water will be scorching and you can use a dry cycle.
dishwasher, run it only when full, use the air dry function, it will use less water than one load of dishes by hand.
